Rafa was unlucky in this tournament. In tennis a player has two main type of games. An offensive game which involves using mostly forehand and a defensive which involves mostly backhand. Before 2011 Rafa had the best defensive and the most solid backhand game. But not only did Nadal have a solid defensive he also had a good offensive capability. He could switch from defense to offence in fraction of time. But In 2011 Djokovic somehow surpassed him in the defensive area. The reason is not clear - not sure whether Djokovic just raised his level or Nadal's defensive level went down. However Nadal appeared to try to remedy the situation by raising his offensive game which means raising his forehand game. He started trying out different rackets and so on. It appeared that some of the extra concentration on the forehand game was at the expense of the defensive backhand game. There was significant advancement in offensive capability. Federer who plays a highly offensive game, appears to have difficulties with solid defensive players. But as Rafa's defensive game reduced from 2011 and Rafa probably paying less attention to his backhand game, Federer started to achieve more successes against him. At the moment it appears Rafa can still beat mid level to low level players with his forehand. But against the high level players he needs his defensive backhand game to be at very high level to achieve success especially at the artificial hard courts that tend to dampen or absorb the energy of the spinning forehand topspin shots. Tennis experts have checked statistics to find out that it is mostly players that have good defensive game that wins most of the time. Djokovic usually also has problems with players with good defensive game, that is players who can match his defensive ability and at the same time have offensive capability. He had problems with Nadal's defensive backhand before 2011. The other players that he presently has problems with have defensive game that comes with good backhand like Wawrinka and Thiem who seem to give Djokovic the most problems. Federer also had successes against Djokovic when his backhand was very solid reliable consistent and was used offensively in defense.

I extremely appreciate the fact that Nadal never does speculations about possibilities. He always accept reality as it is and goes on. He even said that he doesn't like to say unlucky; but even if he says it, you can clearly see that he does not waste time doing wishful thinking about the past. He's like: maybe I was unlucky, now let's go on with life. A very mature approach in my opinion :)

Poor Rafa, he's suffered a lot of bad luck and heartbreakers at the AO. It's sad to see one of the effects of aging: not quite the physical and mental endurance he had in his youth. If this were Rafa in his prime, early to mid 20s, I can imagine him losing the third set, but I can't imagine him going on to also lose the 4th and 5th.

He must have been fed up of answering questions related to his record at the AO (hearing his sighs) but, nevetheless, he responded calmly, frankly and directly. The thing with Rafa is that his play style is like brute strength, which is gonna take a heavy toll on his body for sure, unlike Roger's play style which is the total opposite. If Rafa is showing signs of fatigue/cramp as seen in his match against Tsitsipas, then what makes you think Rafa can play til 39 years of age like Roger. It's just gonna get alot worst for Rafa from here on just saying...
