Pikes Peak: Racing with NO RULES
What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000 foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road-tarmac and 2000 foot drops.

The Unlimited Division is like nothing else in motorsport. Taking a look at the regulations, they say as long as you conform to the regular safety rules - you can do anything you like.
As much power as you want, any design and as much downforce as you can create. As long as you have a roll-cage, harnesses, helmets and other standard safety features - you’re good to go.
This leads to some extremely fast cars, and yet all of them are very different.
So what does it take to take the record at Pikes Peak? How quick is it possible to go with no rules?

Yo I just had this million dolalr idea let AIs drive those crazy machines so we could make them even faster and more dangerous with little or no need for safety features. Imagine the craziness racing can get when we don't need to worry about that driver behind the wheel going home to his kids.

It's worth noting that the aero wings are only that huge to generate down force _at lower speeds_ than an F1 car races at. On a course like this cornering speed is where time is gained rather than on the straights so grip is king.

Isn’t it funny how someone can fly off a mountain into trees at a high speed, getting bruises and be fine. But a soccer/football player can twist their ankle and need to be taken away by stretcher. How are they real sports but racing isn’t to these people
Die Dampfbrasse

Because racers sit on their ass protected by expensive hightec cages and stuff while an engine does the work and money/engineering determines if they get a shot at winning, genius! real sports is about personal skill and achievment, not about being present while something else does the work and gets crushed for you.

0:09 I've DRIVEN Pikes Peak - back when the higher part of it was still gravel. (no, I wasn't in the race - just wanted to see the course the one and only time I was ever in the area). Aero is mostly a waste except for DOWNFORCE on the very fastest parts of that road, but might be more important now that they HAVE paved it all.

I might try a turboshaft jet engine from a helicopter, with six or even eight wheels and sucking some of the engine air from under the car when braking and turning. Multiple wheels would allow much more down force without destroying the tires. The goal would be 4G's acceleration, braking, and cornering - just on the limit of what a driver could stand. Also probably computer-enhanced steering and traction control to prevent sliding off the hill. Basically use some of the tricks that drag racers use to get 5G acceleration, including different tires inspired by top fuelers.

“Power to weight ratio” and “Less air at high elevation” This means advantageous for electric vehicles, I wonder if how many participants comes with electric motors... Fuel are much lighter than batteries, and batteries are prone to overheating, but the power to weight of electric motors can be far higher than that of the combustion engines, and more weight is saved on the gears.

This is called racing. Formula 1 should be like this. No limits on engine ,speed or downforce ,only safety regulations.
