The E32 BMW 750iL was BMW's flagship luxury sedan from 30 years ago -- and it was the first V12-powered luxury sedan in this segment. Today I'm reviewing the 750iL, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a special BMW luxury sedan -- then I'm going to drive the 750iL and review the BMW 750iL driving experience.

The rear seat belt is arranged that way because it restrains the passengers better, allegedly the head does not knock on the vehicle side on a side impact. That is all to it, no Taxi myth, no first responder myth.

Cars like this were at the pinnacle of creative design and comfort. Not sure why they are compared to modern cars when they're in a league of their own!

Bosch didn't make a V12 Motronic ECU in 1987, so BMW used two fully separate 6-cylinder engine control systems for this engine. There are 2 fuel pumps, 2 distributors, 2 ECMs, etc. You can run the engine and drive around on the right or left bank only, which is sometimes useful for diagnostic trouble-shooting.

Those wheels are made in Italy. They are the EXACT same wheels that are fitted to The 95 MERC, but mine have Mercury Hubcaps. Those wheels were fitted to early-90s Crown Vics, Grand Marquis , and Town Cars. I took 'em off of a '92 Crown Vic, and fitted used Mercury caps -- I like the looks of the classic-style pattern that I call "Italian Lace". Getting hard to find quality tires for the 15-inchers -- may have to go to 17s. www.mercuryforum.com/forum/grand-marquis-14/1995-grand-marquis-restoration-8937/

Apparently the rear seat belts were designed that way to priorise stopping lateral movement in a side impact, so rear occupants would not clash heads. I have so much of this exact same stuff as options in one of my 540i E34s (the cheaper baby brother to the E32). I love it all, especially the first aid kit under the front seat that was "Made in West Germany". Along with the more modern V8/5 speed in the lighter E34, it is a classic car that is far more liveable than other 30 year old cars, it is fantastically cheap as its the under the radar consumable alternative to these classics, but the high build quality means a lot of the stuff lasts if its kept clean. Modern suspension really helps wake these up (the body roll on worn stock suspension is especially horrible)

Some comments: The rear seat buckles are in thr oppsite side due to the rear seat passengers shouldn´t collide the heads in an accident. Info from the brouchure I had back in the days. The V12 produces 300 hp, at least here in Europe. As you said, Mercedes was wayyy later with the V12, the needed something that was special... Mercedes V12 produced 300 kW (instead of hp) that equals to 408 hp. But only some years later du to emission rules down to 397 hp, but 292 kW wasn´t that cool.... :D Thank you for this review of my "Traumwagen" (dream car) of the 80´s and early 90´s!!!!

My first car was an E32 735IL. Still one of my favorite cars and it's still on the road today. BMW doesn't make them like they used to. You can really tell the difference between an 80's BMW and a mid 2000's BMW. On the shift mode selector mine had an S button that you could get to by pushing the whole slider down. I think the E was for Economy because that was the standard mode every time you started the car. Mine had a quirk where the BC would go into German every couple starts.

Pretty sure the auto dimmer is just that...you don't have to position the slider under the word "Auto" Doug. The word "Auto" just lets you know the mirror has an auto dimmer. You slide the leaver to the position you want and the auto dimmer feature dims the mirror based on where you have positioned the slider.

200mp/h on Autobahn? Ok...... more like 155..... You should seperate the old cars from the new ones, it is getting boring everytime you say the same stuff. Or stick to the new cars-I dont care much about them-if a person is into those classic cars all the modern stuff is not needed.

BMW of earlier years (not sure about modern ones) had an extra reservoir with a special cleaning fluid in the engine bay which was activated by the S function ( I had it in an old 5 series). It was more aggressive, so no need to use it all the time e.g. in rainy weather. But if you had a long journey on the Autobahn with a lot of dead bugs on the windscreen it came in handy... I guess that is also the case here.

This was the first luxury car that my dad bought to treat himself after he "made it". It was his baby and he really loved it, even though it had to go to service all the time and was something of a lemon (first year model.) I drove it fairly regularly. But one night in the late 90's while in high school, I got in an accident and totaled it. Still one of my worst memories having to wake my dad in the middle of the night, with the car on a tow truck in the drive way.

Didn’t the Jaguar XJ12 and Toyota Century had a V12 before BMW and Mercedes-Benz did? Then Audi followed with their V12 or W12 later. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin always had V12s. Eventually Rolls Royce and Bentley joined the V12 club.

I owned one of these from 1991-2002, and absolutely loved the car. I had it Dinan-modified, which gave it more push and actually improved the mpg. It remains the most comfortable cross-country driving vehicle I've ever owned, smooth, quiet and relaxing to drive, but unlike a Cadillac, it handled extremely well at speed in winding country roads. Maintenance was a bit spendy unsurprisingly. We lived in Detroit at the time. My car was black, and I'm sure we were seen as entrepreneurs in illicit enterprises. You didn't mention the window shades, the reclining back seats, the incredible fit and finish of all surfaces nor the leather quality which shows in your vehicle. I still think it is a beautiful car and a real benchmark t the time.
