SLS VS Starship: Why does SLS still exist?!

NASA just announced the lunar landers for the Artemis program and to everyone’s surprise, SpaceX’s MASSIVE Starship is actually one of the landers NASA chose alongside Blue Origin and Dynetics.
And this is bringing up a lot of questions, some of which we’ll answer in my next video, “Should NASA just cancel SLS and use Starship and / or other commercial launchers for Artemis?”. But today I think we need to settle a lot of debates here first about these two rockets and now more than ever, it’s time we truly pit them head to head.

Reasons SLS is being built 1. The public likes it when the feds build rockets.... it reminds them of I Dream Of Jeannie 2. Any CAT 1 program actually spawns small businesses and research efforts. 3. STEM, the government is creating a new generation of rocket engineers who will hopefully innovate and keep the US at the head of spacecraft engineering. SpaceX rules, but it's not growing the work force.

I think the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy are hard to envision, even though they are flying missions. Starship is truly revolutionary, What if, instead of refueling the Starship in orbit they dock a fully fueled Starship Booster to a Starship in orbit. Of course that booster engine configuration would be optimized for space and the mission. Just a thought...

I think the real thing to take away from this is Elon Musk himself. By the time this is all over, regardless of if he achieves his goals like he wants, Elon will have completely changed the game. Spaceflight is forever changed. The car industry is changed. Transportation in general is changed. All because one massive dickhead with absurd amounts of money also happened to be a futurist visionary.

A lot of good information here and a monumental case for Starship, except for the nightmare of refueling. But one thought or question occurs to me. Why not use SRBs like SLS has to help Starship into a LEO, or position for trans- lunar, or trans-martian injection? Seems to me that for the delta V involved, using SRB's to at least get started, and possibly for injection would save a very large amount of fuel, and certainly reduce costs and additional fuel to get that fuel up there. Especially if we used 4 SRB's instead of just 2.

One comparison I love to use is the history of Lamborghini, literally a tractor company building a super car. I think in the world of space flight that's a fair comparison to make for SpaceX. I mean Lamborghini completely changed the face of automobile engineering, I don't think it's far fetch to say SpaceX will do the same for rocket engineering.

It's very clear that failure to recover first stage boosters will mean a failure of the program, with out stage recovery Artemis will not be cost competitive with either SpaceX or New Glenn. Artemis should only be developed as a possible replacement for a failure in the New Glenn project, it should not proceed to mass production until failure of New Glenn. It's also clear that rocket propellant should be standardised on Methane/LOX.
