Anyone suggesting that Russell's one drive in the car is making Merc think twice about signing Lewis are deludeded. Very few of the Rumors regarding Hamilton's Salary demands have been true in the past and I suspect most of this isn't. However it isn't far fetched. I already thought that he would get one of the F1 Cars and their new hyper car as he is helping develop that. Also Ambassador roles have been given to former drivers in the past so that is nothing new. The hardest part to believe is the 10% of the Team Winnings though. I would not sign onto that.

(with 2 WDC when signing the contract I think) -2002 and 2003 it was $32M per year = $46,036,420.23 per year after infl. So, 50Mil a year isnt actually that ridiculous for that level of F1 driver. I'm fairly certain his on something around 40mil+ a year at the moment. And since his won every championship since then, his value has hardly decreased. I actually think the major sticking point is probably the 4 year deal. The driver salary cap is actually irrelevant, because if it does come in it would not apply to pre-existing contracts (which is probably why Lewis wants a 4 year deal). His signing his last contract, his going to go to the wire to get every last penny he can because, if its your last contract that what you do. The money is insane to us normal people, but its context. Previous contracts have established his value. The actual number is kind of irrelevant. You have a job. You signed a contract for £100 a day to do that job to the best of your ability 3 years ago. You've done that job better then anyone else for the last 3 years. Wouldn't you expect to get paid more if you signed on again? You've proved no-one does that job better.

Somehow I doubt these rumours about Hamilton are true. He just doesn't seem like the guy who particularly cares about money, especially with developments last year. I still feel it's more likely he wants a short deal, perhaps just a year, and Mercedes wants him to commit to a longer contract.

So, all this is speculation and therefore pointless. Why not stop looking in a crystal ball and report facts.

It's all crap. Lewis is looking for business opportunities far forward from today and that's why there could be a delay. He is getting involved in other sports and personal investments now. They won't go for that and as for a driver. George Russell a fantastic replacement and a great bloke, however Lewis is pure quality to the team rather than just a driver, so there must be some compromise.

The big financial incentives ($30M bonus for winning 2x constructors in a row and the $20M top 3 fund) have been eliminated for 2021 and the teams' championship winnings are also much more even than before. Therefore I think it doesn't make sense for Merc to pay Hamilton even as high a salary as this year since the team's earnings are less connected to his performance, as great as it is. If I was Merc I'd offer $30M a year max for 2 years, take it or leave it.
